antiques are green
i was standing in a large swedish furniture retailer (i am sure most of you know who i am talking about) a few weeks ago watching hordes of people being herded literally like cattle through every square inch of the store on a pre-determined route. first you pass the bedroom section then onto kitchens then bathrooms and so on. i have to take my hat off to them in some respects whom ever developed this is a genius as it takes impulse purchases to another level. people are walking out the door with products they didn't even know they needed purely because they have been shown these products set in a nice fashionable environment rather than on a shelf. their displays are fantastic,nfl draft fitted hats, the store feels very open with great lighting and the rather long route they take you on is in some ways interesting. they are so geared up for you to stay as long as possible they even have a canteen on the middle floor for you to stop and refuel your buying enthusiasm no doubt!
there is no question that this is a great way to shop, free parking, central heating,red bull hats, large light spaces, loads of products under one roof and many more reasons i am sure. however call me old fashioned but if i am looking for furniture or any home ware for that matter i don't think you can beat a good old antique fairs! yes it might be cold or raining and you even have to pay to get in to most but there is no shopping experience like it. you stroll up to a dealers stall to nose threw his/her products, they are more often than not chatty and welcoming. not all the furniture at an antiques fair is antiques some is just good quality furniture. some stalls even sell new handmade furniture. one thing you will not find however is a piece of furniture which will fall apart if you sneeze on it. these products sold at antique fairs were and are built to last hence why they are still around today. it is also tremendously good for the environment to purchase an antique/ second hand item rather than a new one. because chances are a tree was chopped down to make that item then that tree was sent to china on a ship, turned into for example a wardrobe then put back on a ship, shipped all the way to the uk then driven by a lorry from the port to the store.
so if you want to do your bit for the environment think about visiting an antique fairs next time you need furniture.
